Description
Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care seeks an Emergency Department Lead to guide our 24/7 emergency service. In this role, you’ll coordinate daily operations, lead and mentor veterinary technicians and support staff, and ensure smooth patient flow in a fast-paced environment. You’ll collaborate closely with specialists, support high-quality emergency and critical care, and help refine protocols and workflows. This position is ideal for an experienced veterinary professional who thrives in a team-based, learning-focused culture and is committed to compassionate client communication during stressful situations.Lead and support the emergency department team during all shifts
Coordinate patient triage, flow, and communication with specialty services
Oversee daily operations, scheduling, and resource allocation for emergency service
Ensure adherence to hospital protocols, safety, and quality standards
Mentor and train veterinary technicians and support staff
Support compassionate, clear communication with clients in high-stress situations
Collaborate with hospital leadership on process improvements and workflow optimization
Assist with maintaining accurate medical records and efficient use of EMR systems
Veterinary emergency triage
Team leadership in clinical setting
Emergency case management
Client communication in high-stress situations
Veterinary medical record systems (EMR)
Protocol and workflow development
Staff training and mentoring
Coordination with specialty services
Quality and safety oversight
Scheduling and resource coordination
Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or equivalent preferred
Prior leadership or charge/lead technician experience in emergency or specialty practice
Experience in a 24/7 or high-volume veterinary emergency setting
Proficiency with veterinary EMR systems
Training in emergency and critical care procedures preferred
